WHAT IS A REFRACTION?

One of the most important parts of your eye exam today is the refraction. The refraction test, also termed vision test, is an examination that tests an individual’s ability to see an object at a specific distance. It is also how we determine the best possible visual acuity and function of your eye, which is essential medical information for us to have as we assess your eyes and look for problems. The test involves looking through a device called a phoropter to read letters or recognize symbols on a wall chart through lenses of differing strength which are contained within the device. (During this process, we will ask you “Which is better…one or two?”). This test is performed as part of a normal eye examination to determine whether an individual has normal vision. It is also used to determine the prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses.

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT?

Unfortunately, most medical insurance plans, including Medicare, do NOT cover refractions.  Medicare allows that we charge separately for that portion of the examination, since it is not a covered service. Our office fee for refraction is $30.00 and unless your plan covers the refraction charge, this fee is collected at the time of service in addition to any co-payment and deductibles.
